In 2008, Pak Hamdan bought 1 ha size farm as his retirement venture. Hendra (2nd generation coffee farmer) returned to his birthplace Gayo in 2011 after studied in Jogja to help his family with their coffee farm. He is now the main drive behind this farm's production.
A random mix of different varieties, such as Catimor, Tim-Tim, P88, Abyssinia, etc were already existed in the farm and still grow here (and Gayo in general) today. This is why it is a rare thing to see single-variety separated lots from Gayo. In order to improve size uniformnity coffee cherry is separated by collection point, in this case is growing altitude. Cherries from similar altitude will be processed together. This will lead to a more uniform size, density and consistent cup quality.
It's very challenging to do naturall process coffee in Pantan Musara. Temperature could drop to below 16 deg C and moisture could jump up to 80% at night. There's also a lot rain during drying time in December. Some days were no sun at all. After picking, coffees are slowly dried on raised bed (under the shade) for 14-20 days, then move to patio for further drying. The better airflow of raised bed in initial fragile drying stage is what make this a very clean coffee.
